I heard an interview with one of the people who did this.  He said that there is soldering involved in addition to running some software, so it's not something just anyone can do.  They're also saying that it's completely legal.

It is legal, as the DMCA (or whatever it is) took Cell Phone Unlocking out of it and made it legal, but cracked down harder on game console modding (even though IMO, some console modding is just fine...but I won't get into that too deeply).

On the news I thought I heard that two different parties accomplished it. One was a teenager who physically opened the phone and did some rewiring, soldering, etc, and the other was a group of people who came up with a software only solution which they'll be marketing some time soon. Since I wasn't listening that closely I could have gotten some of this wrong, but that's what I thought I heard. At any rate, it doesn't put a collective smile on AT&T's face, that's for sure.

You are correct, there were two different parties who have unlocked it.
I think the kid was the first one (don't quote me on that). He then proceeded to put it up for bid on ebay(I heard this on the radio, I havent checked for myself), and as of saturday it was up to 45k with five days of bidding left.

Actually, I thought the other group did it first, but, they used a form of SIM cloning where the teen actually re-wrote the phones software to allow any providers SIM card.  I think that is right anyways...

$45,000.00 for a cell phone..................and I really thought I'd seen it all. Roll Eyes

edit: No actually I haven't seen those before. Smart move on the kid's part trading his unlocked phone for a car and three phones instead of dealing with potential eBay fraud. Still hard to believe anyone would want one that bad.

Didn't a 360 make it past $1 million when it first launched?

If it did I don't remember seeing it. Wouldn't surprise me though. A lot of us from the IGN boards were watching the crazy bidding going on back then, but I don't recall one going for that much. There were some ridiculous bids at the time but I don't remember the exact figures though. It's insane what people will pay when they just have to have something.

I was one of the crazy ones waiting in line for one (360 that is) at our CompUSA (Willowbrook one that closed down).

I got there at 6 the night before and I was only the 2nd person in line.  They got 22 of them, I think they had 16 premiums and 6 cores.  It was a nice group of people we had waiting, someone brought several LCDs and Xboxes and had a mini Halo2 LAN while we waited for the 360.

Well, that's still not as crazy as bidding $10,000.00 on a video game system now is it? Plus you got to hang out with some cool people, so it's all good. Fortunately for me I got to be good friends with the manager of EBGames in a nearby mall and he gave me a heads up about pre-ordering, so I just picked it up at 8:00 the next morning. Poor guy looked like death warmed over when I got there. Got out of the video games business 6 months later...lol.

It's probably only insane to us ordinary joe's, but (for ex.) if your over a mil a year it's nothing relative to your salary.
