Landlines are cheaper if you are not one to use the landline to make long distance calls.
Land lines are, generally speaking, more reliable.

I've got a landline at home (it's cheap, bout 15 bucks a month) which is missing a SLEW of features which are avail on the U-verse Voice. I don't need these features, i need a phone.

If i need to make a long distance call, i first call my google voice number, log in, then make the long distance call from google voice.

I've since added Ooma core to my line, so now long distance calls are free (had to pay 200 bucks for the Ooma Core unit, service works great).

I called AT&T and added Voice and will activate Aug 3rd when my telephone number ports over. No extra charges and they sent a battery backup to plug into gateway. Life is sweet.

I currently am using TMobile VOIP with no bells and whistles but they pissed me off. Anyone know what Uverse charges for calls to Mexico?

Any tips for setting up appreciated.

You can get the international rates on the uverse web site.   If you have a burgular alarm connected to your phone line make sure it is compatible (check the company) and make sure it works properly after the installation.  There are multiple posts on this subject on this forum.  To set it up (the way you want) you just have to work through the features/voicemail setup on the web site.

My burglar alarms are 2 rather stout goldens who don't like people any where near their house.

The only drawbacks I see to U-verse voice are that it's pricey compared to third party VoIP services, and they won't let you use your own VoIP hardware. But as a replacement for POTS its acceptable.
