There has been much discussion in the forums lately about ATT dropping the extra STBs that are part of the standard deal. It is now official as their latest press release states most packages include a DVR and additional STBs are an extra $5/month. So far this year ATT has dropped their bundle discount and now the extra two included STBs. This amounts to a $20 price increase for most new customers. If this continues they will be no different than cable companys when it comes to nickel and diming their customers. At least with cable you could still get the lower 100 channels.
On one the previous investor webcasts John Stankey commented that they would get 10% market share no matter what charged. So this may mean the default price is rising for those willing to dump their cable as soon as service is available, but still be able to offer better deals when trying to extract more than 10% share. Or it may just mean they want to get u-verse profitable sooner. If ATT continues to have strong future u-verse subscriber adds, it will appear that maybe John was right.
Here is the press release that press release. It also appears west Michigan(Battle Creek, Grand Rapids, Holland,
Kalamazoo and others) now has access to U-verse and U-voice as well well.
ATT will also be reporting Qtr1 numbers on Tuesday.
