AT&T's new CEO Randall Stephenson stated that U-verse will be available by year end in Atlanta. So it appears that people in the Bell South territory will not be waiting much longer for U-verse. Read the entire interview AJC
It is also being reported that the Norman Oklahoma will have U-verse go live on Aug 6. For all the details of the deal with Norman, go to The Norman Transcript |

A new smaller version of infamous 52b boxes are finding their way to a right of way near you. These are about 1/2 as tall as the current 52b boxes, which hopefully should make cities much less likely to block U-verse service because they find the full size 52b box unsightly. I spotted one of these boxes near where I work in San Antonio last week, but uverseuser cbehm was nice enough to snap a pic of one.

Alcatel-Lucent is now shipping 48 port VDSL2 line cards. These new cards support pair bonding and POTS termination. These cards increase bandwidth and/or reach over VDSL cards. The POTS termination means that normal phone calls can be converted to VOIP at the VRAD. Maybe this means line powered voip is coming in the future. Read more here |

AT&T has selected Ericsson and Alcatel-Lucent to provide GPON gear for new builds. Deployment is expected to begin in 2008. I guess this means that those that already have FTTP from AT&T will have to wait till next year to get off the DSL network and get on the U-verse network. |

The internet is buzzing today with news from the LA Times that AT&T is partnering with Hollywood studios and recording companies to develop and implement "deep packet inspection and monitoring" technology on its massive nation-wide network in order to keep pirated content off its network. Although it can be very difficult if not impossible for a machine to determine whether copyrighted content is pirated, AT&T appears to be moving ahead. The company says it will target repeat offenders and will not violate user privacy or FCC directives on network openness, but many would argue that it is impossible to carry out such a program without violating user privacy. We will keep you posted as more information about this program is revealed. |

AT&T had their Investor Relations Webcast today, and revealed some disappointing interesting details about the state of its U-verse IPTV product. Most disappointing was the announcement that several key features of the IPTV platform have been pushed back an entire year. Here is a brief summary of the information that was revealed.
Current State of Service
- U-verse TV is currently passing 3 million homes in 21 markets
- More than 70% of AT&T's access lines have received approval for U-verse
- Current Install Rate - 600 per day, expect 10,000 per week by end of 2007
- More than 40,000 current subscribers
Planned Features & Target Dates
- Photos, VoIP, U-Bar, Yellow Pages - Q4 2007
- 2 HD Streams, Pair Bonding, iNID - Q2 2008
- Whole Home DVR - Q3 2008
- Caller ID on TV - Q4 2008
- Higher Speeds based on loop length - 2008
Additional Notes
- Planning to have 100+ HD channels by 2009
- 4 HD Streams + Internet + VoIP will require 37.8Mbps
- Pair Bonding can deliver 58Mbps or higher depending on loop length
Many of these announcements come as a surprise to those of us that have been following U-verse. The biggest surprise is that Whole Home DVR has been pushed to Q308. That feature was originally planned for Q306 and later pushed to 2007. Users have also been told to expect multiple HD streams by the end of 2007, but it appears that deadline has slipped also. We are hoping that these target dates are purposefully pushed back to ensure that they hit their deadlines, but it sure doesn't look like we will be seeing Whole Home DVR any time this year. |

To sling or not to sling, that is the question.
Actually, no it’s not. Without a doubt the Slingbox is one of the greatest gadgets to hit the market in the last decade. Who wouldn’t want to be able to access THEIR OWN TV programming from anywhere in the world where there is broadband internet available. You pay for 24-7 access to hundreds of TV channels, but you only have access to them for the 2-3 hours a day most Americans spend watching TV. With the Slingbox you can watch and control your TV any time of the day or night from anywhere in the world using your laptop or internet enabled phone.
