Interesting quote about market penetration
Written by uverse
Tuesday, 30 October 2007
Randall Stephenson had a question and answer session at the Forbes Meet II Forum last week. This is what he had say about adoption of U-verse in new markets:

"When a new market opens, the first 10% comes really fast, just because you are another option. If you can market you get another 20%, if you get really aggressive you can get another 20%."

So it appears AT&T is having no problem selling U-verse. Listen to it all.

Since we are on the topic of marketing U-verse, I had the time this week to look at the results from Verizon and AT&T and their video products. And it appears there is almost no difference in product ramp speed between FIOS and U-verse. While ATT is behind in total subscriber count, this is only because they started marketing to the public a year behind Verizon. Verizon left its trial market for the general public in qtr1 2006 and AT&T left its trial market in qtr1 2007. All these numbers were taken from their quarterly reports. I also projected that AT&T would add 100k subscribers in its next qtr.

QTR 3 2007 Update
Written by uverse
Wednesday, 24 October 2007
ATT announced its 3rd quarter results this week and there was not much new information about U-verse given. U-verse finished the 3rd qtr with 126,000 subs and they are nearing their target install rate of 10,000 subs a week. I am going to guess that ATT is going to add over 100k subs in qtr4 and hopefully not lose the subs they have in Connecticut. No new numbers were released for homes passes, churn rate or market penetration.

Market Penetration I am going to go under the assumption that the homes passed is now around 6 million as they are still on track to pass 8 by year end. I will also assume that only about 1/2 of those are open to marketing. It is probably safe to assume that they currently have about 150,000 subs or more. Using these two numbers we get a market penetration rate of about 5%. This guess is backed up by published numbers from Connecticut having 140,000 homes passed and 7,000 subs(5% market penetration).

VOIP Users are reporting that their RG are being updated with new firmware that has voice menus.

National Outage During the conference call it was reported that a bad software load during the weekend upgrade caused the outage and not capacity issues. ATT it is time to fix your IVR system. Outages happen and you need your IVR system to be prepared for it. A simple before before routing someone to tech support probably would have saved the poor souls who were working tech support on Sunday. This is far better option than transferring someone to a busy signal because your call center is swamped.

HD and new codecs New codecs maybe in place that take the HD streams down to 6 meg from 8.5meg. If 2 HD streams do not get enabled soon, it is going to be very obvious that the 1 HD limitation is due to backend issues and not bandwidth constraints. Each stream with overhead probably requires less than 8 meg total. So 2(hd)*8+2(sd)*2+6(internet)=26meg. U-verse vdsl is provisioned at 27meg, so there still should be 1 meg left over for voip.

AT&T may stop Connecticut U-verse investment
Written by uverse

There has been a long saga with AT&T and Connecticut and things are getting worse for U-verse. First AT&T convinced their PUC that U-verse was not cable and did not require a cable franchise. That ruling was overturned in court. However AT&T had a back up plan and managed to get new statewide cable franchising passed. The Connecticut PUC rejected the application under the new law and want to do their franchise under the old rules.

AT&T is going back to court on this ruling and if it loses, 1300 jobs, more than $300 Million in U-verse investment and 7,000 subscribers will be lost.

This is probably worth contacting your state/local CT officials as this is a very anti-consumer ruling.

Forums are currently down

I dont think I needed to tell anyone that, but they are currently down. Uvadmin is aware of the problem and he is trying to work the php error that everyone is getting. Hopefully we will get things back up soon.

UPDATE: We have been able to get the forums back up and running, although not as cleanly or well integrated as they were before. This should at least allow the community to stay in touch while we work on restoring the forums to their previous glory.

U-verse Update

AT&T's Group President-Regional Telecommunications & Entertainment Ralph de la Vega gave an investor interview webcast and offered a few tidbits about U-verse. Installation time is falling with the average now being 6.5 hours and the best installer averaging 4 hours. New HD encoders will be out next month with bitrate going down to 6.5meg. This is down from the current 8.5 meg. However I am hearing the new encoders will improve quality, even though it has decreased bitrate. He also states that the once DRM is worked out we will be able to move content on and off the DVR via the USB port.

The press release also states that U-verse is available to 325,000 residences in DFW and that is up from 200,000 when U-verse launched in DFW. Here is U-bar preview for everyone that is not in this market.

Thanks again to casey for getting us the screenshots.

U-verse hits 100k
Written by uverse
Wednesday, 05 September 2007
Today AT&T officially announced it had reach 100K subs for U-verse. That means in the past 2 months AT&T has added 49K, which translates to install rate of about 6000 subs a week. So AT&T should end this quarter with at least 125k subs and probably more as the install rate appears to keep increasing.

They also noted that U-verse has now passed 5 million dwellings and service is available to about 1/2 of those. This yields an overall market penetration of 4%. It is probably safe to assume areas that have been open ot marketing longer have penetration rates easily above 4%. Maybe AT&T can shed some light on this on the next conference call.

Future of DSL and FTTN
Written by uverse
Saturday, 25 August 2007
Rim Semiconductor announced that is ready to release IPSL hardware today. IPSL is a new variation of DSL with max speeds of 384megabits compared to 100megabit of vdsl2. They also claim this new hardware will deliver 35 megabits at 8000 feet. Compare this to the 27meg that ATT is currently delivering at 2800 feet. This new hardware sounds like it would alleviate much of the bandwidth constraints of FTTN architecture. Maybe we will see ATT adopt this or similar technology after their initial U-verse deployment is complete.

More information on the product line.
