Wireless connections to XP-based PC and laptops won't stay up.  Get error "can't acquire IP address."  Have tried new SSID name, changing channels, etc.  End up having to either power off/on the RG, or go into the RG and disable/enable wireless.  But eventually it drops again.  I have noticed that when it drops for the PC and laptops, the Wii stays connected and can communicate.  Makes me wonder if there is a problem in how the RG talks to XP.

Def not a xp issue. It also does not have anything to do with your gateway.
You would be best to first make sure your drivers for your wireless cards are fully up to date.
also if the drivers have their own connection manager uninstall them then reinstall just the device drivers and use wireless zero config which is built in. 3rd party connection managers are useless at this point in time and can cause issues if wireless zero config is active.
If you are using the 2wire connection manager they have made it super easy to remove just that application without removing the device drivers.
I wish you luck and can without a doubt guarantee you that it's not your computers your operating system or your gateway.

Try switching the wireless security from the built in WPA2 to WEP.  For some reason this seemed to clear up a similar issue for me.

WEP is easy to crack. You would be better off security wise with WPA or WPA2.

Using the WPA2, it usually takes a couple times for the settings to sink in and allow my other computer to connect.  I put in the proper password each time, it's just funky to get it to work.  Keep trying and it may clear up on its own.

can you clarify this?  I've been using WEP with 128bit encryption for years without an issue...

Personally, If I have an option between WPA2 or WEP I would use WPA2. It is well know that WEP (with 128 bit encryption or WEP2) is more vulnerable than WPA2. I could go on and on, but all you need to do is google wep vs wpa.

Its just like car insurance...  you could go years with just liability and never have a problem but all it takes is one accident and you wished you had full coverage.

If your computer isn't getting an IP address but you can see the wireless network and you can attempt to connect to it, most likely the problem is that the key you are entering does not match what the 2Wire gateway has set in it's settings so it is not assigning your computer an address. If you want to troubleshoot to find out if the key is the problem, go into the wireless settings page in your gateway and uncheck the box for encryption and then click save. Attempt to connect again, if it works then you need to check the settings and enter the information correctly. The best thing you can do is find where your wireless manager on your computer stores it's "preferred network" list and remove your wireless network from that list, if it has a key typed incorrectly thats where it will be storing it. Once it has been removed, the next time you attempt to connect to your network it will prompt you for a key.
