calebthegeek is reporting (http://www.uverseusers.com/component/option,com_smf/Itemid,2/topic,7475.msg67154/#msg67154) that he now has a 2HD/2SD profile on his u-verse setup. It appears that St. Louis will be getting this profile first and it will roll to other markets over the next month or so.

His IPTV cap has also be increased to 29.9 meg from the current 20.9 meg profile.  I am going to assume this means the RG cap has been raised as well since this is 5 megs above its 25 meg cap.

In other new San Antonio officially has U-bar and Flickr. (http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/stories.pl?ACCT=104&STORY=/www/story/04-29-2008/0004802336&EDATE=)

This is great news. After hearing about it for the last year, my patience were growing thin.

Now, if we can get one of our Uverse employees to shed some light on the rest of the rollout schedule? Will we all have it within a month or is it taking a month for just the first few cities?

They will probably take just as long as they are with the U-bar, which correct me if I am wrong, is still in the process of being deployed.

Better late than never, I suppose.  Kudos to At&t for finally rolling this out..should make them at least an option for those who actually make use of HD programming in more than a ultra-casual manner.  Too little, too late for me in particular unless they come out with something that REALLY dazzles and impresses, but then I'm harder to impress than most it seems :p

On a related tangent, the Uverse HD demo at the at&t store in Austin is still a macroblocked mess (the side-by-side display next to the satellite feed makes it glaringly obvious).  Maybe they'll fix that next?

So far, the roll out in St. Louis is faster than expected (based on what I was told when I called them last night). I got it this morning with no action on AT&T's part. They claim it's going to each video server location in turn, so once it's updated, a bunch of people get the new profile. There is no reason this should take more than an hour to do, nationwide... hence, it will take a year. It's pretty low risk for AT&T so I don't know why they don't just do it in that hour.

So does this mean that WHDVR is on it's way?  The service people at AT&T that I've talked to made it sound like this was a hand-in-hand thing.  One could only hope  ::)

This all sounds rather exciting.  But, has anyone seen the quality of the HD channels yet?  Are they equal to, or better than, the single HD channel?  Lately my HD channels (in CT) have looked somewhat better (I'd say within the past month or so).  Maybe AT&T has switched to a better codec w/ less macroblocking (yeah, there's still some showing up) or maybe it's because I made the switch over to HDMI cables.

Lets get some honest HD opinions here!

michigan may be getting it soon because my whole service went out for about 15-30 minutes last night around 2:30am Et. and I guess it went out the night before at 1:30am Et. as well. So maybe we are about to give it. I did hear that St. louis had a lot of outages before they got 2HD so maybe this is a good sign. I hope so.

There is no reason to believe that. I'm assuming WHDVR will never happen so that I'm not disappointed  ;) Way too many rumors and nobody wants to talk about it to the investors on they last conference call... that cannot be a good thing (it may be neutral, but it cannot be good).

Just checked this morning, and we are still showing 3/1, but we are FTTP here in St. Louis, so it may be a bit.

Funny thing last night, when the sirens went off, we turned on the TV downstairs which was on the same HD channel as the one upstairs (that we left on). Both played in HD but the system still says we are 1HD/3SD. My location is South Overland Park, KS.

Have noticed that the HD channels look better lately and macroblocking is less. Only real issue is the audio using HDMI. The echo during commercials when they blast the darn things is very noticeable. May consider going to Component unless this changes.

Otherwise we have been very pleased with the U-Verse. Much better than Time Warner or Everest. Now if only they would let me get the one channel I am missing on my plan that I want (CNN-International) without going up to the next level...

You can watch the same HD channel on as many TVs as you'd like.

10 to 12 what?

I assume Mb/s, but that doesn't even make sense because it never was officially 10Mb/s.  Not too long ago they dropped it from 8Mb/s to 6.5Mb/s.  Since it is a VBR though (at least through my findings), it fluctuates quite a lot with ~2-3Mb/s spikes on either side of 6.5Mb/s.

Dual HD streams at 12Mb/s each would fill almost the entire pipe alone.  I just don't see it working out.

If true, Uverse will have pulled off the trifecta towards being a viable service (internet bandwidth, number of HD streams, quality of HD).  Things like WHDVR are nice to have, but not critical IMHO. Here's to hoping ;)

Given the fact that the profile bandwidth is (apparently) getting raise to around 30Mbps as part of this...even 12Mbps (I'm assuming we're talking spike, not sustained or even average, due to the VBR nature of the streams) would fit just fine with proper QoS rules in place.

Dual HD streams at 12Mb/s each would fill almost the entire pipe alone.  I just don't see it working out.

I might not mind too much if the 2 HD streams could on rare occasions spike to 8.5 Mbps from the nominal 6.5 Mbps and borrow from the MAX Internet, reducing it from 10 Mbps to 6 Mbps temporarily, IF and only if, it went no lower than 6 Mbps and when the HD streams are using a low instantaneous rate of 4.5 Mbps, that the Internet spikes UP to 14 Mbps by using the unneeded HD bandwidth. And when you're not watching any HD, the Internet would spike up to 23 Mbps! (10 Mbps MAX Internet + 2 x 6.5 Mbps unused HD stream bandwidth).

But these are all silly bandwidth bandage games. The real answer is for them to supply 4 high quality HD streams, 20/15 Mbps Internet with less than 15 ms pings to www.yahoo.com . That's a starting point for a semi-competitive product with other existing and high speed services rolling out across the country from other providers. Then you continue to improve from there by further improving HD quality (you're not done, until you reach 1080p, and by then things like quad HD will emerge), adding a couple more or unlimited HD streams (at least 6 HD streams total), and way fast Internet, 100+/100+ Mbps Internet continuing up to 1000/1000 Mbps (1/1 Gbps), which would be good for the next 5-10 years. In 10 years, you might need more than 1000/1000 Mbps, ask me in 10 years after we see the new applications enabled by 100/100 Mbps Internet.

AT&T needs to pick up the pace on increasing the bandwidth to enable more HD streams at higher quality and increase the Internet speeds, especially on the upload speed and decrease the ping times. It's a pathetic statement when people sign up for U-verse and some of them keep their DSL line because U-verse can't match DSL's lower ping time. This of course is dependent on someone getting the highest DSL tier and needing a lower ping time more than U-verse's higher upload speed, but it's still pathetic that U-verse with it's shorter copper loop length, technology that's 5-10 years newer than DSL and status as AT&T's future platform can't replace or best DSL in all cases. Shameful!

So I agree with you, KK, that I just don't see U-verse working out as a quality, future platform until they finally break the shackles and constant negative compromises of a 25/2 Mbps profile for all of the TV, Internet and VOIP services.

So we wait and maybe get pair bonding and VDSL2 for higher speeds by the end of the year, hopefully without more price hikes to new customers or existing customers who make a change to their service...

Official update on the 2HD deployment.  Markets that now have 2HD support for new customers effective today 5/12 are:

St. Louis MO
Fairfield and Hartford CT
Atlanta GA
Indianapolis IN
Sacramento CA

We are migrating existing HD customers as quickly as possible as the markets deploy but this takes time based on the number of subscribers.  Please be patient and allow the migration to occur before calling in for support.  All the receviers in your home will reboot to enable the functionality.

Ok, so what happens to those of us who only use SD?

Right now, we don't have enough streams to satisfy the house. My sister even disowned me because she couldn't watch Grey's Anatomy one time!

We have 4 boxes, and can't even watch them all at the same time if even ONE show is being recorded, so now if we have one show recording we won't be able to watch ANYTHING else??

Please clear this up, am I going to be screwed with SD, or does HD count as an SD stream, and I won't notice anything changed?

In Cleveland,OH today, I had an new order with 2HD/2SD as the profile (at least that is what it listed on the paper copy of the order).  I'm not sure if it worked because they rescheduled and I did not get to do the Install.

Title: Re: 2HD/2SD is rolling out now!

Jarvis, if the profile is 2/2 you can still use 4 SD streams if you don't have the HD service.  There are some here that even have a 5/0 (SD/HD) profile that don't have HD, but it is still a mystery how one would actually request that profile.

Also, I just went to the uverse.att.com website to try to sign-up for Uverse in Cleveland,OH.  On the page that you select packages and it has an estimated price it list the profile as 2HD/2SD streams in the estimated price area.  Kind of interesting.  It at least must be updated in OMS for the new profile.

**UPDATE**  I just got it today!  I live in Marietta just north of Atlanta.  I checked my settings today, and BLAADOOW!  (SD/HD) (2/2)  but my cap had'nt raised.  I rebooted my DVR STB and checked again and I am sitting pretty at a new higher cap of 29900000!  Im so excited!  I have 2 HDTVs in my house now I can enjoy them both at the same time!!  Or record 1 HD show and watch another.  Now if I can just convince them to release the WHDVR...

with the whole home dvr thing is it true that you have to replace boxes to the new cisco ones to get whdvr or is that a rumor?

Title: Re: 2HD/2SD is rolling out now!

It's probably a rumor...

It's probably a rumor...

I hope so because I know there is a channel that I can go to (9999) and its a dvr channel that says "DVR not available on this TV" on the bottom of the screen. I'm just wondering if that will be the whdvr channel we they green light it.

There are people who already have the service (not NEW installs/customers) and they are calling in and getting it TURNED ON.  So, they obviously (most likely) have the old Moto boxes.

I called the regular ATT Uverse #, and they said it wasn't available. It obviously is as I live about 5 miles tops from the person who posted here from Cudahy, WI. I live in Milwaukee. So, I guess I just need to find the right person. Anybody know what number I should call in the Milwaukee area to get this done?

Well I finally gave in and called support about 2hd streams and they said they knew it would be rolled out soon. I metioned ready on a blog that some are calling in and getting it pushed out and that some had talked to sales. I then asked to talk to sales. I was transferred to sales and the young lady I talked to knew nothing about it but said she would talk to her manager. In a few minutes she cam back and said that her manager said that it was available and that she would push it out and I would have it before I got home. Soooooo when I get home we will see. Just as a side note while I was talking to tech support they ran a check on my line and said that they saw errors ..... GOOD SERVICE! Someone is coming out tomorrow! About 2 weeks ago I started getting pixelation during a bad storm. They came out and said there was a problem at the VRAD that was supposedly fixed the next day. I have always though I was getting a smoke screen then so maybe it will be fixed this time. I still seem to get some pixelation when it rains.

Got 2HD in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

I had bought an HDTV finally last weekend and yesterday I put in an order for HD service through my online account access.  The boxes were still reading 1/3 but after the order for the service was complete and I rebooted the boxes, the 2/2 came up on each one.

I am in North Richland Hills, TX. Does anyone have the information(name/employee #) of a tech/sales person that was able to add it?

I live in Overland Park, KS.  I put in a call to UVerse Tech support and asked if 2hd/2sd was available in my area.  She was not quick to say yes but once I told her I had heard reports of this she did some checking.  She said that it was available but not yet rolled out because they are not 100% sure a fullout rollout would happen without any kinks, so they have been rolling it out as a slow drip in the area for now.  I told her that I would love to be a part of the "test market" so to speak in the area and she got me all setup.  A couple hours later, my box showed 2HD/2SD.  I noticed that my bitrate cap was still at 20.9mbs so i did a box reset and when it popped back up my cap was at 29.9!

I heard no reports that it was in my area but just called to test the waters and it worked out.  I would encourage all of you to put in a call as well, who knows maybe its in your area already.

Cheers!

Big doings in Tennessee these days, AT&T got much of what it wanted insofar as state franchising is concerned, cable was complicit in trying to screw up things for the cities, towns and counties.

And all along, AT&T seems to have been quietly  building the infrastructure for U-Verse (http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/05/25/comcast-flier-all-but-confirms-u-verse-in-tennessee/) without a franchise.

Now, I 'spect most of you folks are certain you are libertarians and don't want no gummint telling hard working bidnesses how to behave, so it will go waaayyyy over your heads that AT&T was acting in bad faith in this case.  Well, faith probably had little to do with it:  The sponsor of the legislation is married to an AT&T employee (http://live.freepress.net/node/39482), the Speaker of the House who called cable and AT&T into the henhouse to divvy up the chickens is married to an AT&T lobbyist, it was a done deal before it began.

I'm guessing that few of you are in permanent relationships and even fewer have families, so the way U-Verse behaves (http://riedelcommunications.blogspot.com/2008/05/potemkin-village.html) is of no consequence to you, so long as you are part of the cool kids that have it.

Bless your hearts.

So, the elected leader of the Lower House of the State Legislature of Tennessee is married to an AT&T Employee. Are you saying that the state video law is therefore inappropriate? Should the Speaker of the House have resigned his position or abstained from this process? I am not sure where you are going with your point about the TN Speaker of the House being married to an AT&T Employee.

The people of the great state of TN elect both Houses of the TN Legislature, and then the members of the State House of Reps elect their Speaker. Your elected officials feel that the current Speaker is their guy/girl, and he is doing his/her job, which includes introducing and passing new legislation.

the 2hd profile is capable in all video offices now aside from San Antonio. San Antonio is slated for an upgrade completion date of middle of june so around the 16th to 20th. So if you call in and request it you should have no problems (assuming of course you are already on the new setup).

I live in Corona CA. I called yesterday and they turned on the 2HD feed for me last night.

I was out last night and didn't watch TV. So this morning I checked one of my non DVR boxes (I have 4 all together). I switched to and HD channel. The quality was horrible on my 1080p 50" plasma. In fact it looked like regular SD tv. I even switched back and forth between channels 7 and 1007. The only real difference was the black bars going away. The quality was nearly identical.

This was no where near the quality I had before with 1HD stream. I checked the system info, and the bandwith cap still reads 20,950,000. I've read that this should go up from others post. So I assume what is happening is my HD bitrate is cut in half to this box.

That's all the time I had this morning and I headed off to work. On the way I called my daughter and had her check the DVR box. That box is reporting 29,900,000. I haven't seen the HD picture but I expect it will be back to what it was. I then had my daughter hold the power button to reboot the non DVR box. After it came up it still read 20,900,000. Maybe it didn't reboot right?

Anyone else noticed a quality drop in the HD signal after enabling 2HD streams?

NOTE: - I know about different channels offering different HD qualities and I checked almost all of them. They were all the same. HD Theater, Discovery, etc. All were SD quality. I doubled checked my Aspect ratio is 1080i, and I'm running everything on real cat 5 (not HomePNA) with gigabit switches to the RG.

I called the 1-888-320-2167 number and a tech had my service pushed to 2HD/2SD in less than five minutes.  When I got home from work, the system info page showed the new profile but I had to reboot the STBs for that to take effect.

I live in Vernon Hills, IL (a northern suburb of Chicago).

They also gave me a discount on upgrading to U300 from U200...just $15 a month.  That was a nice surprise since everything I've seen says that's a $20 difference.

I called ATT about a billing problem and while I was on the phone asked them about the 2SD2HD upgrade I’ve been hearing about. I live in the Dallas area and after reading these posts thought it was time to inquire. Sure enough it was available. I’m now up to 29900000 bandwidth cap. This was available after a restart of all the receivers which I knew to do immediately just because of the posts I’ve read here. I know this is new to ATT but the lack of information is irritating. If they can turn it on they should know to tell you to restart all your receivers. One other thing. It pays to ask. You will get things a lot quicker than if you wait for notification. Thanks to all of you here for your posts.

Addison, Illinois has it too. My U-Verse account page actually had a note in red on my products screen saying an upgrade may be available in your area and to call in. Sure enough I called in and they actually said the upgrade was already applied and was pending. I just need to reboot the RG and receivers when I get home for it to take effect

I just called sales and got 2 HD streams turned on in south Austin, TX  (Circle-C).    They gave me a free month of HD service also because I was on hold a few minutes while they updated the computer for all this.   It will not be turned on until tomorrow.

A quick call to sales (12 minutes on hold) and I had 2HD streams. I was told 24 hours to
take effect, but after a reboot I am enjoying the second stream.

2HD/2SD apparently has been pushed out in Northern Illinois (Lakemoor).  I checked over the weekend and I now have it.  No call or request for update needed.

Anyone know about rollout of 2HD/2SD in San Diego? Did a reboot and we don't have it.

I had a brand new install yesterday in Cupertino, CA, and I'm getting 2hd/2sd.  Incidentally, before the install started, I asked the tech if it was available here and he said no, not yet.  But it's definitely working.

I have had it St. Louis, MO for about 3 months now. When it showed up I just stumbled on to it.
AT&T just turned it on with out saying a word.

Don't you just love a communication company?

If your STB shows the 2/2 on it and your on 20meg just reboot it and it should read 29meg.  You dont need to call to have it turned on.

Does anyone else have the issue that I have, now that 2SD/2HD has been activated??

I have an HDTV, and previously, with 3SD/1HD, my SD channels would stretch to fit my screen.

Now, with 2SD/2HD, my SD channels have the black bars on each side of the screen, and won't stretch to fill...

My aspect ratio has not changed at all, same as it used to be on my STB.

Help???

I am not sure I understand what you are experiencing? Do you have one or two HD sets?

As far as I know STB/DVRs do not stretch SD video to full screen on their own.

You must use the enter/zoom button on bottom lower right to stretch the image. But, wherever you set the video to it will remain in this mode until you change it back to normal. If not, HD will not look right.

All STB/DVRs will do HD but you can only have 2 streams at once.

If you’re SD TVs were stretched before, are sure something wasn’t change on them?

Or did you use the AT&T remote to stretch them as described above? If you did, and left them in this mode they should remain in that mode unless the boxes lose power.

I have one HD set.  In the past, my SD channels were stretched to fit my screen.  I was using the 1080i aspect ratio on my STB.

Since the 2SD/2HD upgrade, still using the 1080i aspect ratio on my STB, my SD channels show up with the black bars on both sides, not stretched to fit the screen.

Hope that explains my issue...

tommyz, hit the enter button in the lower right corner of the remote.  that will change the settings for "Zooming" the screen.  There are about 4-5 settings you can cycle through.  But the stretch is there for you.

If I understand you correctly you are using one HD set with a STB set in HD 1080i.

When you are watching SD TV (4 x 3 images) from this box its not a stretched picture right?

To get a stretched picture you must use the zoom feature to do this.

If you do this and left it in this mode it should remain until you change it or the STB looses power.

But remember on a HD channel if you don’t put it back to normal HD will not look right.

I'll try this when I get home from work!

Thanks!

Got WHDVR this morning but still have 3SD/1HD. Though it doesn't bother me too much since I don't have a single HDTV yet.
